Claude AI, Claude Code, Claude Cowork: what's the difference?
Anthropic has launched three products that all carry the name "Claude." If you're not a developer, it's easy to get confused. Here's the simple guide.
Claude AI: the chat
The most well-known. You go to claude.ai, ask a question, Claude answers. Like ChatGPT, but it's Claude.
Who it's for: everyone. You want to summarize a document, draft an email, analyze a spreadsheet, brainstorm an idea, Claude AI does the work.
What it does well: answering your questions, analyzing files, writing content, explaining concepts.
The limit: it's reactive. Claude waits for your question and responds. It won't go find information on its own, it won't chain multiple steps together, it won't touch your files.
Price: free (limited) or $20 USD/month for Claude Pro.
Claude Code: the builder
Claude Code is a command-line tool. You describe what you want to build, and it codes, tests, fixes, and ships.
Who it's for: developers and technical entrepreneurs. If you can open a terminal and type a command, Claude Code can save you weeks of work.
What it does well: building websites, applications, automations. Reading and modifying code. Running tests. Managing git. Creating complete tools from A to Z.
Real example: the site you're reading right now was built with Claude Code. In one day. From zero to a complete site with a blog, newsletter, two languages, and deployment.
The limit: you need to be comfortable with the terminal. It's not a visual tool. But that's exactly what we teach at RucheLab.

Claude Cowork: the office assistant
The newest addition. Claude Cowork is an autonomous agent that works on your computer. It reads your files, moves between your applications, and completes multi-step tasks.
Who it's for: non-technical professionals. Researchers, analysts, admin managers, ops people. Anyone who handles lots of documents and information.
What it does well: extracting data from documents, organizing files, synthesizing meeting notes, preparing reports. Everything that is "I spend 3 hours copying and pasting between 4 tools."
The limit: still in preview. Capabilities are evolving fast.
